Summertime Memories

As the bells ring for that last class of the year and lockers are cleaned out minds are slowly drifting away into Summertime activities.....although my locker has  been cleaned out for awhile I still have to return to "class" aka "work" every week ~ but never the less it is summertime and the beach is calling .... The cove is getting busier with new divers and repeat visitors along with families seeking beachside fun for a day making summertime memories. As I teach another Open Water Class to kick off summer I'm thankful to be part of the summertime  beach rituals.
Water temp was 68 degrees which is warmer than usual, it was another great day of diving which is hard toy explain if you have never dove, the fish colors are always amazing and to think that God created it all still blows my mind. Intelligent design is front and center in the ocean and on the surface, wonder why most people don't see it ??

My first adventure spear & lobster hunting

Spear & lobster fishing was a blast. Headed out this past Saturday with a buddy who was finishing up his OW cert and to do some spear and lobster fishing. Paul who is already a free diver decided to get his PADI OW cert to enhance his spear fishing capabilities . It was a great time, weather was perfect the sea was pretty calm. Once we arrived at our location the sun was just starting to set we put on our wet suits grabbed our light and lobster bags and dropped into the water. Lobster diving is a rush all of its own, you have the element of the dark water, holding your breathe and looking for these large sea bugs. They are lighting fast too. When the light hits them they scatter and hide like a cockroaches.  With Paul's skilled  experience we were able to grab 6 large bugs bag them and be done .

The next morning we finished off Paul's OW cert and did a little spear hunting. Boy do I have a fish story about the one  that got away !!   I came up upon a large halibut I quickly lined up the shot and pulled the trigger and nothing, my safety was on!!  So I quickly took off the safety and lined back up...Bam !!! I nailed it !!! This halibut was so large it took off with me attached, it went straight, turned right, swung back around for a 360 and that's when it gave us the fin and was outta there, my spear broke in half, and my big fish was gone.... Man,  what a rush !!!!...I'm hooked on spearfishing now, now I know why my dad used to spear the waters of Catalina back in his day.
Paul was able to shoot another halibut before we headed back. Thanks Paul for a great adventure of lobster and spear fishing.
Now it's time to enjoy the fruits of our labor.  That night was an already planned dinner party for my daughter Hillary who just received her Masters degree .Here fiancĂ© Ryan helped cook up the lobster while hank their large lab looked on with caution and curiosity ....

We boiled up the lobster and then finished them off on the grill ~ they were awesome !!
Kathy took the sheep's head and made ceviche and hands down the tenderest white fish that was perfect for ceviche.
Needles to say I loved the entire experience, I guess you could say I'm hooked. Thanks  again Paul for a great experience looking forward to doing it again.

Summer 2013

Diving the Summer away with friends, family & Students
The underwater world is quiet. Whether I am diving in the Caribbean or our local beach coves, the moment I drop below the surface of the water the clamor of modern life fades away. I am in foreign world, where strange creatures float and where the rules of physics that govern my everyday existence no longer apply. Gravity disappears. For the duration of the dive I am an explorer, using my skills and equipment to navigate an environment few humans are privileged to experience.
To dive safely, a person must focus on his immediate surroundings and actions. A diver must manage his dive gear and monitor his depth, time, and air supply. Unusual aquatic life and the bizarre environment consume his attention...

Underwater, you cannot be reached on your cell phone. The latest Facebook updates will have to wait. Life goes on pause and you are simply alone with your thoughts and exploring Gods underwater world.
